Korey Williams has been around and he knows how important a winning legacy is to Southern Miss fans. The Golden Eagles' ability to put a quality product on the field was one of the things that attracted Korey to Hattiesburg. This weekend Southern Miss will host Prairie View in the home opener. The USM defense will be looking to bounce back from a tough outing last week.

Korey Williams profile

"Practice has been great this week," said Williams. "I think last week opened some people's eyes. Everybody has real good intensity this week."

Korey has found some things during film study that impress him about this weekend's opponent.

"They have a good team," said Williams of Prairie View. "They have a running back (Donald Babers) that is as good as anybody we see week in and week out.

"They went something like 9-1 last year and that's impressive in any conference, not just the SWAC."

Last week's trip to Columbia, South Carolina was not one of the Southern Miss defense's better moments.

The group is looking to learn from the contest and move on.

"Coach Fedora told us that you always make your biggest improvements between the first and second games," said Korey. "We are going to learn from last week and get on with the rest of the season.

"As linebackers we have the ability to take over a game and that is what we are looking to do this week."

Williams is confident about his team's chances this weekend and he promises a strong effort from the Golden Eagle defense.

"We gave up a lot of points last week," said Korey. "That was one of the worst games we have had since I have been there.

"We don't get beat bad like that around here. That wasn't Southern Miss football." Recommended Stories
