Defensive back Martez Thompson had originally commited to USM and Coach Fedora out of Pascagoula High School, but ended up enrolling at Mississippi Gulf Coast where he has developed as a player and improved his game.
Two days ago, he made it official that he is ready to take on the new challenge of Division One football at Southern Miss.
"Basically it started in the spring when I was put on the recruiting list after I had a great year last year," he said. "I feel like I was ready to commit before it was too late, and I was just ready to make my decision."
He talked about several factors that led to his decision. "Southern is close to home, and my family can come see me play," he said.
"I love the campus and the environment. When I went on my visit my senior year I remembered how much I loved the campus."
Thompson received several offers from Division One schools, but in the end, it was the opportunity to stay in south Mississippi that made the difference.
"I think that was the biggest factor," he said. "I just really wanted my family and friends to be close by and see me play."
Thompson is closing out his time at MGCCC, and is anxious to get to Hattiesburg to get started. "My season is going well," he added. "I don't have any interceptions but it is not like the season that I had last year. I set the bar really high with my freshman season, but it is still going good."
His plans are to enroll in January at Southern Miss and participate in spring practice. "I am getting out of here in December, and I'll be at Southern Miss in January and I can't wait," he said.
