He talked with GoldenEaglePride.com this afternoon, and spoke of the special feeling he had while on campus.
"I had a real good time, the punter Peter Boehme hosted me," he said.
"I just had a real good time, I met all the guys and just felt like I fit right in. I loved seeing the facilities and hung out with the coaches. It was just a great time."
It was not the only time Schuffert had been on campus. "I came last summer to an elite camp," he said. "When I came here this summer I had a lot of interest and loved it. I'm just glad things worked out so I could be here."
In early January, the long snapper had committed to UAB, but always had Southern Miss in mind. "This summer, when I came to Southern Miss there was just something that made me feel at home here," he said. "That certainly carried over to this weekend, it just felt like a big family here."
"I have always wanted to go there, and this week Coach Kap gave me a call and said, I think it might work out, we had a snapper that left."
How do the coaches plan on using Schuffert? "I am going to be a deep snapper," he said. "I am not as big as you want a Division One deep snapper, and that is fine with me. I am glad to get to play and compete."
Schuffert is 6'1, 245lbs, and is eager to get started at Southern Miss.
