Robbins Ready To Be An Eagle

It has already been an outstanding season for Southern Miss baseball, and the post-season outlook is promising. With the consistent success of the baseball program, Coach Berry and his staff continue to reload. Tonight, talked with future Eagle Mason Robbins of George County about his season, and his thoughts on the MLB draft.

Robbins has always put up big individual numbers, but in his senior season, he is most excited about his team's success.

"It's my senior season and we have not made the playoffs since my 9th grade year," he said. "But I really had some high hopes for us this season. I didn't think I'd hit as many home runs this season because I didn't think anyone would pitch to me."

"I just have to select my pitches, and my team has played so much better than I thought we would. They have all really stepped it up and I hope we can keep this little run going that we are on right now."

His team is still alive and closing in on another goal, a trip to state. "With a win Saturday we'll be 20-9 and we play Gulfport Friday night. If we win those games we'll go to south state."

Robbins has established himself as one of the dominant pitchers in the state. The lefty throws hard and is very accurate. "My pitching has gone really well, I've had the most wins and strikeouts I've ever had in this season," he added. "My team has really given me good run support. My team has put up some runs and I can take it from there."

"In the off season I am going to continue to work on my off speed stuff and my location."

In talking about Southern Miss, Robbins is clear he in the fall he is going to be where he always wanted to be.

"I was so excited when I signed with Southern Miss," he said. "I have been to about three or four games, and they are doing great this season. I am pumped and ready to get up there."

"The class we have coming in is going to be great. I know all of them, I have played with all of them, and it is going to be great. There are a bunch of great guys and we are all ready to get up there."

Robbins listed many reasons for his desire to play for the Golden Eagle program. "The high expectations were a big part of it," he said. "Also, the coaching staff, which I think is the best in the country is just a group of great guys and good coaches."

What about the prospects of getting drafted and playing professional baseball right out of high school?

"The scouts have been at most of my games," he said. "I will probably go in the draft, but I'll tell you this, it will be hard to get me away from Southern Miss."

"I will play with the same team I've played with out of Louisiana, but most of all I am going to rest my arm and lift weights and get ready for the fall."

How do the coaches plan to use him at Southern Miss?

"My scholarship was based on a dual role, as outfielder and hitter," he said. "I imagine I will play outfield and come in for some relief pitching too."

Robbins and his team continue their playoff march, and then he turns all his attention to his career at Southern Miss. Stay with as we continue to track the future stars for the Eagles. Recommended Stories
