HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior infielder B.A. Vollmuth and Golden Eagle signee Conner Barron were each taken in the third round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday afternoon.

Vollmuth was taken by the Oakland Athletics with the 105th pick.

A three-year starter for the Golden Eagles, Vollmuth recently finished his junior campaign with a .301 batting average to go along with team bests of 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in. He was a finalist for the state’s top collegiate player this spring, the Cellular South Ferriss Award, and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection as well as a member of the Golden Spikes Award watch list.

The Biloxi, Miss., native is the first Golden Eagle taken in the Top 10 rounds since Brian Dozier went in the eighth round to the Minnesota Twins in 2009. He is also the highest Golden Eagle selection since Clint King was chosen in the third round of the 2003 draft by the Chicago White Sox.

Vollmuth also becomes the 15th Golden Eagles ever taken in the Top 10 rounds of the MLB Player Draft.

Barron, the first player from the state of Mississippi, was chosen as a shortstop by the Florida Marlins with the 102nd overall pick in the draft. He led his high school team, Sumrall High School, in hits (51), runs scored (53), batting average (.490) and triples (4) as the team won its fourth-straight Class 3A state title this spring.
