The Vancleave, MS (LB) told the staff late last night that he wanted to commit to being a Golden Eagle.
"I had visited Southern Miss during the day, and I sat down and talked with the defensive coordinator and head coach," he said. "I toured campus, talked with the recruiting coordinator who I got along well with, and I was told a bunch of things that had me interested."
Southern Miss sees McCorvey in a role similar to the one Jamie Collins will play this season.
"The role they have for me I feel will be a good fit," he said. "They plan to use me as a hybrid lineman and defensive end. They want to use me either in coverage or a three point stance getting after the quarterback."
That was not the only factor that came into play. "I really liked the atmosphere there," he said. "I loved the football field, strength coach, and got along well with the players. Everything was just good."
McCorvey said the close proximity to home played a huge factor. "Being close to home where friends, coaches, and family can all see me play was huge for me," he said. "I am excited that I won't be getting home sick either."
The athletic linebacker plans to continue working out, and enjoying having this process over as he looks forward to a big senior season.
His commitment is the third yesterday for Southern Miss. They added "Tip" McKenzie of Natchez, and C.J. Perry of Bessemer (AL) yesterday as well in what has been a great start to the class of 2012.
