Weekly Football Fix

Weekly Football Fix

Sure, it's still only June, but we are already looking ahead to football season. For those who can't get enough football, GoldenEaglePride.com will be bringing you weekly updates getting ready for the season. Today, we get a follow up on the traveling recruiting camps and get an inside look at summer work-outs.

We are always thinking football year round here at GoldenEaglePride.com, and we'll be counting down the weeks to fall camp by looking inside the football program each week.

I talked with WR's coach Walt Bell, who was recovering from a recent flurry of traveling recruiting camps that took Southern Miss all around the Southeast.

"It is something that I have been associated with for a while, being at Oklahoma St., and that was one of the things that helped to elevate that program," he said.

"That same mentality has really helped drive what we are doing here, getting people to talk about Southern Miss. There is a whole group of kids and high school coaches that if for nothing else, people see how organized we are, how efficient we are, and how well we do things. It is really a positive experience for us, and for the kids for that day to have them see what we bring to those kids."

For the coaches, summer is obviously a major recruiting period. Coach Bell commented on the hard work of this staff and how it has already benefited through several big commits for the class of 2012.

"We had more one day travel camps than anywhere I've ever been," he said. "We were doing two a day for four or five days, and then we'll come back and have a one day camp on July 16th. In terms of work, no one works as hard as we do."

"Right now, when we finished our last traveling camp, we drove 8 hours home, and then noon the next day started another weekend camp," he continued. "There seems to always be a flurry of commitments after our traveling camps from the kids who were really impressed, then there is always another flurry of commits right before our fall camp starts in July."

"Usually, you have the biggest make up of your whole class right here after our camps, and then before the fall camps."

We also took a look into the summer work-outs that can make all the difference in the fall for the Golden Eagles. New strength and conditioning coordinator Coach Jackson has come in and had an immediate impact.

"Without a doubt, the guys have been here since around May 29th, and they've really been getting after it," he said.

"Coach Jackson is unbelievable now. In terms of energy, there is no one like him. If the kids show up and just match his intensity level, it is like nothing I have ever seen."

Coach Jackson impressed everyone when he came on board in the winter, and the summer is going just as well.

"The kids are excited, and that is 95% of the battle, getting them excited and buying in," he added.

"You can already see gain in the numbers, like in terms of the strength in power numbers, he is doing a great, great job."

He continued talking about the offense and the experience coming back.

"As long as Austin Davis, Quintin Pierce, William Spight, and some of our veteran O-lineman are leading like they have been, we've had some of the best work-outs I've ever seen," he said.

"We are not allowed to watch, but the excitement level is off the charts right now and it is going to pay off big time in the fall."

A few other football notes:

--Right now the coaches are not able to call the recruits, they can only call them. They can, however, use social media such as facebook.

--Southern Miss just offered White Castle running back Tyre Bracken

--Keep an eye on Whitehaven (Memphis) RB Antonio Thomas. He had an incredible showing at the camp in Olive Branch.

--Jonathan Curry, 3 star TE from Phenix City (AL) got an offer back in March, and he said Southern Miss is very much on the radar and is talking back and forth with the Golden Eagle coaches. He attended the camp and liked what the coaches told him about his possible role as an Eagle.

--Anthony Alford, QB, Petal, was on campus for the 7 on 7 tourney put on by Brett Favre. Reports are that he had a great visit and was able to meet with both football and baseball coaches. Don't count Southern Miss out here though LSU has the inside track.
