Williams is a 6'2, 250 Defensive End who signed with Southern Miss in the early signing period. He is from Tunica, MS where he played high school football, but has recently been at Coahoma CC where he played defensive end.
He is eager to get to Hattiesburg and get started in spring practice where he'll be competing for a job in day 1.
"One reason I wanted to go to Southern Miss was because I wanted to stay in state," he said. "It is a great school, and they had a great season. I just want to go there and keep it going."
Williams committed to Southern Miss back in the summer, but has not waivered from his decision even through the coaching change.
"When they changed coaches I was thinking about going to another school only because I was not sure what to expect," he said. "When I saw it was Coach Johnson, I have heard about what a good defensive coach he is, and being a defensive player I was very excited about that."
Williams has been able to talk to the new head man about how he'll be used at Southern Miss.
"Coach Johnson has called me, and also Coach McGee as well," he said. "I haven't talked to him a lot, but we've been able to talk some."
"He knows I have been a stand up end, and they like my versitility," he added. "They've said they'll use me to drop into coverage too. I can rush the QB or drop back and cover. Whatever they need me to do, I'll do."
Williams says his experience in junior college will help him at Southern Miss.
"My strength and technique are there because I've had a few years experience in college," he said. "I have played at a higher level so I'll be ready to make the jump to Southern Miss. I can't wait to get out there."
Williams had a great year for Coahoma and could be a Das McCullum type player for the Eagles. He'll report in a few days for the spring semester.
