Cardinals Training Camp Update

CB William Gay is being challenged by Greg Toler, Jamell Fleming and A.J. Jefferson while RB Ryan Williams continues to shine coming off a season-ending injury in 2011.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK:
William Gay
opened training camp as the starting cornerback opposite
Patrick Peterson
. Gay, however, is being challenged by a handful of others, including
Greg Toler
,
Jamell Fleming
and
A.J. Jefferson
. Toler is probably the most serious challenger, and Jefferson played well in last Saturday's scrimmage. Toler missed all of last season after tearing an ACL in the preseason. He's the most athletic cornerback other than Peterson, and he's a physical tackler. But it might take some time for him to get acclimated to football after missing a year.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Williams' work in camp is being closely monitored as he comes off a knee injury. But he's sparkled when given a chance. On the first day of camp, he made a quick cut that had people smiling. In the scrimmage last Saturday, he broke a 44-yard run, although cornerback Patrick Peterson claims he could have tackled Williams in the backfield. "But the head man (Whisenhunt) said I didn't tag off on him, so that's what it was," Peterson said. If both Williams and Wells are healthy at the start of the season, the Cardinals should have a dangerous running back corps. That group also includes third-down back LaRod Stephen-Howling.
ROOKIE REPORT: Receiver
Michael Floyd
, a first-round pick, has looked much better in padded practices than he did in the spring and summer. In pads, Floyd can use his size and strength on smaller defenders. Floyd made some impressive, difficult catches in last Saturday's scrimmage. ... Right tackle
Bobby Massie
, the fourth-round pick, didn't stand out in his first week of work, but he didn't play poorly, either. Massie is competing with
Jeremy Bridges
for the starting job. At 6-6, Massie appears to have a problem with getting too high on his pass sets. At least he did in the first day or two of camp. He appeared to improve through the week.
