Super Fan Ready For Football Season

The Southern Miss football season is upon us and you will not find a fan more excited about that then James Bueno de Silva. James is probably best known for the “Nasty Bunch” flag that he made last year and carried around the country to every single Southern Miss game, including the Hawaii Bowl. James is originally from Brazil and is an avid soccer fan and has brought that same passion to USM.

James Bueno De Silva has a surprise for Southern Miss fans, he is working on a new flag.

A bigger and better flag will be unveiled vs. ECU on September 15th.

“It is coming” James said, “The grand opening for it is going to be the first home game, but I am taking the Nasty Bunch flag to Lincoln for the Nebraska game.”

James spent the entire summer backpacking through Europe (also getting to go to the Olympics) so he had to begin on the flag last semester in order for it to be ready for the first home game.

“I started on the flag back before February” he said, “I have had the four weeks since I have been back to finish it so it has been challenging.”

James is hoping to make this year’s edition of the flag more inclusive than last season’s edition.

“It will say ‘Southern Miss To The Top’ so it will involve all sports and not just the football team’s defense.

“It will also have a new original eagle on it since we lost our logo I just decided to make an original one” James said.

The biggest surprise for Southern Miss fans this year will be the sheer size of the flag.

“The Nasty Bunch sign is 21 sq. feet and this new one, I am thinking, is going to be around 45 sq. feet.”

The flag is so big that he has had to divide up the flag into four sections that he will sew together before the first home game.

“The Nasty Bunch sign I did in my house all at once” James said, “But this one I have to break up into four sections, three of which I already have done.”

So any of you that enjoyed seeing the flag last season, this season you will have to imagine a flag more than twice as big as the Nasty Bunch flag. “The last flag held 120 students under it on average, but this new one will hold over 500 students under it.”

Look for James and his flag in Lincoln on Saturday and stay tuned to GoldenEaglePride.com for more Southern Miss coverage.
