Turning The Page

After a tough loss to Nebraska Saturday, Golden Eagle cornerback Deron Wilson is ready to learn from the loss, and look ahead to East Carolina. Wilson tallied 13 tackles against Nebraska, tying him for the team lead. Wilson is ready to turn the page on the Nebraska loss, and get ready for the team's first home game against ECU.

Wilson said the loss to Nebraska was a tough one to take. "It was a tough loss, but we lost to a good team," the defensive back said. "We just have to move on to East Carolina."

The Southern Miss DB believes the defense's troubles against Nebraska can be cleaned up before the Golden Eagles take the field again.

"A lot of the points [Nebraska] scored were because of missed assignments," Wilson said. "These are things that can be fixed. It's no big deal, we will just move on."

Wilson tries not to focus on the placement of the upcoming weekend off before the East Carolina game, but says being on the field this week would have been nice.

"As a player, I can't think negative, but I would have liked to get the taste of losing out of my mouth," he said.

"The off week does help though, because we'll be coming into the game fresh," the Southern Miss DB said. "The other team will have just played against another opponent, and they're playing against South Carolina this week, which will be a hard-hitting game."

Wilson views the game against Nebraska as a team effort, so his personal stats from the game do not seem to matter to him. "We lost, so I wouldn't say I played well," Wilson said. "I could have left the game with three interceptions; if we lost I don't believe I played well."

"I think everyone on the team feels that way," the Southern Miss corner said. "I would rather catch no interceptions and win the game, than catch three interceptions and lose it."

Wilson is looking forward to the game against East Carolina, especially since it is the team's first home game. "[East Carolina] has some good players," Wilson said. "They're young, but they're East Carolina, so they'll always have playmakers."

"I love to play at The Rock," he said. "It's a great environment to play in, and I think the fans really scare the opponent when they come to play. Every Southern Miss player looks forward to playing there."

As for adjustments and improvements on defense, Wilson believes things can be back on track for the game against East Carolina. "We have to play hard and stop the mental errors," the Southern Miss DB said.

"We have to correct our assignments, and take advantage of plays when they're there, especially me. When I had a chance at an interception against Nebraska, I dropped it. I'm supposed to be a leader on this defense, and if I'm going to be a leader on this defense, I have to make plays like that one."
