A true point guard is rare and hard to find these days. The Eagles, however, have found a point guard for the future in Alex Perez of Fresno City CC.
Perez played his high school basketball at Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista (CA) which is in San Diego.
We asked the point guard how he and Southern Miss hooked up and how the connection came about.
"Coach Tyndall had a connection with my coach out here, and my coach told me about Southern Miss," he informed us. "I started the process there and started building a relationship with Coach Howard.
"Talking with the Coaches, I can tell they really work hard and would make me better as a player and person. It seemed like a great fit for me."
Perez is a 6'2, 180lb point guard who said he has plans to visit Southern Miss soon.
"Coach Howard and I are working on a date where I can come in and get in a full 48 hour visit and enjoy my stay and get to know everyone there," he added.
Perez said his plans are to be used to run the offense, a role that he embraces.
"I'm a true point guard," he said. "I can score it but I really love to get my teammates involved. Even right now, some games I'll have double digit assists. To me, that is what I enjoy and the type of role the coaches at Southern Miss have planned for me."
He also said he's very competitive and intense, something that will fit in perfectly with Coach Tyndall's system.
"They are excited to have me, and I feel like there are not a lot of true point guards out there, so they want to use me in that way."
Perez is leading his CC, Fresno City, to a great start to this point.
"We are doing really well," he said. "We are 11-4, and have a big one next week at home. We had practice today and I'm just trying to be prepared for a run at a championship.
"My experience should help me a lot because my coach is very demanding. He's really tough, and all this stuff he's put me through the past two years have prepared me well for basketball at the next level."
Perez becomes the third commitment to the class of 2013 for the Southern Miss basketball program.
