Brandon Bryant, DB, Tunica (MS) was the first commitment to Southern Miss of the class of 2014. The talented and speedy athlete sealed the deal after his visit to Hattiesburg for Junior Day.

He took a few minutes with today to update his status.

"We started football practice last Monday, and we get in pads tomorrow," he said. "Our spring game is not until about the middle of May.

"Our team is looking real good right now. I'm working on my speed and agility real hard. I'm always working on my coverage skills, tackling, and just staying in the weight room trying to get bigger."

Since committing, Bryant said he hears on a regular basis from the coaching staff at Southern Miss.

"I talk to the coaches all the time," he said. "Coach Pollard calls me a lot and checks in on me. Also Coach Monken calls to talk to me. They'll call to wish me good luck on a track meet and tell me they are really glad I'm committed.

"They tell me they are glad I'm going to be a Golden Eagle, which I am going to be. I'm going to be a Golden Eagle and come to Hattiesburg.

"I had three schools visit me this week, Memphis, Mississippi State, and Arkansas State. I just tell them thanks but I'm committed and I'm going to Hattiesburg to go to school. I feel safe at home at Southern Miss."

Bryant said he's already out recruiting for the Eagles.

"Oh yeah, I tell players all the time about what's going on at Southern Miss," he said. "I tell them how much love they've shown me, and how much excitement the program has. They have shown me the love, and I want others to know about it."

Bryant is also a state champion in track and field, running the 200 and 4x 200. He said his team hopes to repeat this year.

We'll continue to follow up with Bryant and other Golden Eagle prospects as recruiting continues to heat up. Recommended Stories
