"Six weeks ago I had meniscus surgery because I had torn it, so I've been working to recover from that," he updated GoldenEaglePride.com this afternoon.
"That has kept me from participating in any camps. Right now it would really be me pushing it to attend any camps.
"I am ready, but I wouldn't be 100%. I wouldn't want schools to see me when I'm not at my best, and I don't want to risk hurting it before my senior season."
The Golden Eagles have been talking with McGuire and are looking about a possible position change for him.
"Coach Perot has been talking with me a lot and staying in regular contact with me," he said. "I also hear from some of the other coaches through letters.
"Coach wants me to come over to the campus, so I'm coming on the 20th. He wants me to meet the coaches and touring the campus. He told me there is a chance that they'd like to turn me into a defensive end because of my size.
"I like Southern Miss and the defensive tradition."
The offers haven't been coming in yet because he has not been able to participate in camps.
"I am hearing from all the coaching staffs that they really like me, but want to see me play in person before making an offer," he said. "I understand that.
"All the schools interested in me said they'd be coming to a game this fall to see me play."
McGuire is looking for the right fit for him, and one with a strong program both athletically and academically.
"I want to find a place where the coaches really take care of the players," he said. "Academics are very important.
"I want a blitzing, attacking defense to be a part of with a school that has a great tradition.
"A couple of colleges have talked about me being a tight end, but I think I'm going to play on the defensive side of the ball."
"I'm just excited about finding the right fit and getting to where I can help a program."
