USM "On The Rise" With Harrington

Fresh off the excitement of Signing Day for the 2010 class, Coach Fedora and his staff have been hard at work on the class of 2011. One target is talented Briarwood Christian High School's Cooper Harrington. In this interview with, Harrington talks about his junior day experience, his offer to USM, and his next steps in the recruiting process.

Harrington was one who received an offer on the signing day of the 2010 class. He made a huge splash with a stellar junior year as a playmaker on many fronts for Briarwood. Versatile, deceptively fast, and possessing great hands, Harrington caught the attention of the Golden Eagles as a guy who would be a nice fit in the spread offense.

"I got an offer on signing day," he said. "I talked with Coach Fedora on the phone on signing day and they offered me then."

He does have some history with Southern Miss that has made the interest mutual. "I have been a big Southern Miss fan all of my life. I had some family that went there, and both of my uncles played there, and my grandfather was a trainer there. My cousin played at Oak Grove in Hattiesburg as well," he said.

His uncle is former USM player and current assistant facilities and event coordinator Billy Harrington.

He came down for junior day Sunday on the USM campus with current Golden Eagle signee Zeke Walters. He had nothing but positive things to say about his visit. "I went down there, and was surprised by the amount of people there. They treated us real well, and I really like the campus a lot."

Although he knew the campus because of his past experience with Southern Miss, he loved the opportunity to get to spend time with the coaches. "I got to meet them all, I loved all the coaches especially the tight ends coach. I have always really liked Coach Fedora and my recruiting coordinator," he said.

So, where does Southern Miss stand on their recruitment of Harrington? "They are rising on my list. They are getting a lot higher than they have been in the past. They had a ton of people down there for junior day, and the facilities are outrageous, I just loved them," he said.

There are also some other schools drawing interest from Harrington. "I haven't been contacted by any other schools right now, but I am also interested in Auburn, Vanderbilt and Clemson. Last year I went to Vandy and talked to the coaches," he said.

The decision process, however, will be a waiting game as Harrington seeks to explore his options. "Zeke Walters signed in last year's class, and he has been on me trying to get me to commit early. I am the oldest in my family and I want to take my time on my decision. I definitely want to make a decision before the season happens, but I kinda want to go through the whole deal and see what other offers I get. Southern Miss is definitely very high on my list though," he said.
