Dukes Talks About Junior Day

The state of Alabama has been a pipeline of talent for Southern Miss throughout the years. Many prospects from the class of 2011 from Alabama made the trip to Hattiesburg to check out the USM campus for junior day. Today, GEP.com talked with Mobile's Chris Dukes about his visit and his schools of interest.

The speedy running back from UMS Wright Prep School in Mobile has had an interest in Southern Miss for a long time because of family ties. "My dad went to Southern Miss and so I've always been interested in them and have followed them because of that connection," he said.

His Dad was impressed with the changes to the football program since he was in school and Chris has had nothing but good things to say about USM's campus as well. "I like the school from the first time I stepped on it. It has the feeling of not being too big, but not being to small either. I was able to meet several of the players, and the coaches all were very nice. It really had a family atmosphere," he said.

His junior day was a fun day for Dukes. "The coaches showed us around the facilities, and I liked everything about it. From the uniforms to the locker rooms to the stadium, it just had a great smell of football. I really liked the facilities," he said.

He added, "The weight room was really nice. One unique thing that I liked a lot that I had never seen before was the way they had the weights set up by color, not by like 5 or 10 pounds. I had never seen a University do that before, it really caught my eye. I liked the strength and conditioning coaches too, they seemed like guys who would really push us."

Southern Miss is one of many schools showing interest in Dukes, though he is still awaiting his first offer. "Right now I am receiving mail from Alabama, Auburn, Southern Miss, Miami, Florida St., and I just got something today from Illinois. My main interest would be Alabama, Auburn, and I really like Georgia. I am still waiting for my first offer but with all the interest I feel pretty good that it is going to come real soon."

He pointed out that Southern Miss is very much on his radar, and will definitely be a player in his recruitment.

For now, Dukes will be seeking to keep working hard and visiting schools while exploring his options. "Right now I am running track and continuing to work out and get ready for the combines this summer. I have a few Scout combines that I will be attending, and I will be playing for Alabama in a 7 on 7 league so I hope that can help to get the word out," he said.

Stayed tuned to GEP.com as we keep you updated on prospects like Dukes and the rest of the Southern Miss 2011 recruiting class.
