Defensive End Commits To Eagles

The Southern Miss commits have been rolling in all spring, and the start of summer brings in another one. A defensive end from Birmingham made his intentions known after an outstanding performance at camp, and GEP.com talked with him tonight about his future with the Golden Eagles.

Michael Smith, defensive end from Wenonah High School, has committed to Southern Miss.

"It was Coach Kap who recruited me," the star lineman said. "He came by my school and he took a good look at me. He said I would be a good addition to the program."

USM used their camp to evaluate Smith, and loved what they saw. "He gave me a call and got me down there to camp, and I was very interested," Smith said. "I went down there and performed my best and did everything I could. Everything else just went from there."

What was it about Southern Miss that helped Smith to make his decision?

"First of all it was the coaches," he said. "I could just tell by the way we moved in camp during the drills. I could tell by the tradition that it was a great program."

"The up-tempo style and the way we moved through the drills showed me a lot," he added.

Michael describes himself as a speed rusher who is working on his size and bulk this summer.

"They recruited me to play defensive end," he said. "I am packing on the pounds pretty fast, but my speed is really good. I also run track so that has helped a lot."

Now that his decision is made, Smith can focus on his High School and getting them a ring. "I am going to be a great leader on my team, and get this team ready to go out and win a state championship," he said.

GEP.com will continue to track the commitments as they roll in over the next several months. Stay tuned.
