Offenses in Conference USA have become similar to the shoot-outs you might find at an Arena league football game. Up-tempo, pass heavy, and spread from sideline to sideline has become the norm.
The Southern Miss defense had a difficult time stopping the pass last season, and Coach Fedora knows he needs quality safeties who can be a solid last line of defense in order to have some defensive success. That must start with recruiting, and USM is looking to bring in the stoppers of the future.
As we wind down our Tuesday summer notebooks, we take a look today at who Southern Miss has offered at the safety position, and who might be a name or two to watch as the recruiting season continues on.
With the ongoing changing landscape of recruiting, here is who we know has an offer, and where we feel they may be leaning:
1. Darion Arrington, Stone HS, Wiggins, MS
Offers: Alabama, Memphis, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, USM, Stanford, Texas Tech
GEP.com's take: We need to applaud our coaches for not being afraid to go after the very best. Arrington is one of the best safety in the nation, and USM has proven they can be in the mix for anyone. That being said, Arrington is not one Southern Miss will be bringing in. MSU has the inside track on Arrington, he named Texas Tech and MSU as his leaders, but according to GEP.com's Steve Roberston, smart money is on the Bulldogs. USM is not on the radar for Arrington.
2. T.K. Fleming, Benton HS, Benton, LA
Offers: Arkansas, Louisville, LSU, MSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma St., Oregon, SMU, USM, Tennessee, UCLA
GEP.com's take: Fleming has a lot of suitors and a lot of local support for LSU. He has some work to do to qualify, so some schools may elect to wait and see how things go before they crank up their recruitment. Expect it to be a battle to the end for the talented safety, and he has not mentioned USM in his plans. We give USM a 5% chance.
3. Kevin Green, Wooddale HS, Memphis, TN
Offers:, Arkansas St., Memphis, USM,
GEP.com's take: Green is gaining a lot of momentum in the SEC with Tennessee and Alabama out in the forefront. However, the door should not be closed on USM. Southern Miss coaches jumped on Green early and were the first team to offer him. In his comments, that first offer still means a lot to him. While USM has quite a lot of work to do to woo Green away from an SEC school if they were to offer, they are certainly well in the mix. USM has done well in the Memphis area lately. We give them a 35% shot at Green.
4. Jamaal Taylor, Lumberton HS, Lumberton, MS
Offers: Southern Miss
GEP.com's take: USM is in the driver's seat with Jamaal. They don't appear to be pushing for a commitment, but we believe Coach Fedora could secure one if he made a push. In an interview with GEP.com a few weeks ago, Taylor named USM his clear leader. We feel a commitment to USM will be made before the start of his football season. We give USM an 80% chance at landing the local safety.
Keep an eye on:
Nick Carson, New Mexico Military, Roswell, NM
Greyson Chambless, D'Iberville, HS, Biloxi, MS-- Chambless would commit if USM pushed him. He would fit in well if the Eagles made him a priority. He is better than his offer list indicates.
Tyler Basil, New Albany, MS
Kevin Cox, Thibodaux, LA
